Sea Glass JewelryOne of the treasures is sea glass jewelry. It is not made in the traditional sense but, instead, is a unique find on the shores of the ocean. Sea glass comes in all shapes and sizes from the very small pieces to some that are bigger than your hand. So, how is sea glass formed? |

Sea glass, or what some people call beach glass comes from various glass containers that usually are broken at some point and wash up on the shores. Over many years, this glass is washed back and forth by tidal action over surfaces that are sometimes sandy beaches, or rock beaches. The action of the tides moving these pieces of glasses over small rocks or sand smoothes the edges. There are a variety of colors of glass some more common than others. Usually white glass is found to be the most common, then greens, and then blue. While some people may think that sea glass is very easy to find, those who find these treasures know that it can take hours to comb the beaches and often waiting for just the right height of the tides. So, once you find these unique pieces, then how do you make it into jewelry? Some artisans take each piece, only the ones completely smoothed by the tides, and wrap wire around it and create a small circle at the top to which a chain or rope can be attached. Other artisans take each piece and drill a hole through it, and use jewelry wire to create something like a bale so a chain can be attached. Others simply take each piece of glass and glue a bale to it. You can also add sea glass to other forms of handmade jewelry to add uniqueness to the piece. You can be as creative as you wish and it is often these creative pices that fetch a good price at craft shows. Come back and visit lampwork jewelry again. |
