One of the considerations for jewelry makers is the selection of jewelry displays. Now, while this may seem a small point to consider when you are probably more concerned about designing, creating, and ensuring quality of your handmade products, it is a significant issue if you expect to sell your creations.Part of the process of jewelry creation or the art of making lampwork beads for example, is the marketing of your product. To understand this point, just think about your own shopping and buying habits when you are looking for a certain gift. If you were to drop by a store that had jewelry for sale, ask yourself how likely you would buy a necklace that was simply laid onto a table. Or, if you were to consider this necklace, what value would you place on it compared to a necklace artfully and gracefully displayed on a necklace bust where you could see how well it hung, or how it might look on you or a friend.
Displays are a crucial item not to be given only trite consideration. The proper jewelry display can easily make the difference not only between a sale and no sale but the difference between making decent money or making good money for all of your efforts.
Displays, on the other hand, can be very expensive especially when you are only starting out in the jewelry business, or are only selling your creations at local markets or craft shows. One of the options, other than buying displays, is to make your own. You can use a variety of material some of which you may have on hand already. For example, instead of buying a neck bust, you could carve one out of Styrofoam packing and wrap suitable cloth fabric around it. Or, you could make a necklace stand, looking like a "T" by using old wood you have around your home.
Other options, if you find you are not able to make these yourself or don't have the time is to contact wholesale jewelry suppliers or packaging supply companies and purchase inexpensive displays. You don't have to buy the most expensive displays either but you still need to have a display that doesn't appear cheap. And, once the purchase has been made, don't make the final mistake of placing the purchase in an old grocery bag - this definitely takes away from the image you want to create. Simply go to a wholesale supplier of packaging and buy plain plastic bags (these are very inexpensive), or if you are making an environmental statement, simply purchase the tried and true paper bags that come in various shapes and sizes.
