Ammolite JewelryThe background to Ammolite is that it is found exclusively in southern Alberta Canada, and occasionally in small parts of Montana. One of its benefits is that Ammolite comes in a wide variety of colors including red, blue, green, yellow, gold, pink, and many more. Ammolite is a very soft gemstone. |

You may also hear ammolite referred to as korite, aapoak, calcenite, or gem ammonite. It is one of the most recent gemstones and was only given its status as a gemstone in the 1980s although it has been used to make jewelry for several decades before. So, how is it made? It is made from the mineralized remains of ammonites, sea creatures which became extinct millions of years ago. Under the right conditions, the shells of ammonites were covered in layers of sediment and a very slow process of depositing minerals fossilized the shells. Around half of the ammolite recovered in mining operations is considered "gem grade," and most of the gem grade ammolite comes from Canada. Ammolite is unique because it is a fossil as well as a gemstone, and thus protected under the Canadian Fossil Act. Ammolite is only found in one part of the world in an area called the Bearspaw formation that extends through southern Alberta and into Montana. While Ammonites existed all over the world, it was the oil and mineral deposits in Alberta soil that preserved the magnificent gem colors we see today. Making Ammolite into jewelry is not obviously the same as if you were creating a lampwork bead because it is a very soft stone. And, because it is so soft, in its natural polished state in not likely safe in a ring setting because of the amount of wear it would receive. The problem is that Ammolite will scratch easily and is often covered with a crystal cap to protect the stone. Do not make the mistake of trying to coat the Ammolite with a compound like lacquer or epoxy because deterioration problems will certainly arise over time. Use the proper technique to cover the gem and you will have a great piece of unique jewelry for many years to come, and one that is valuable to pass down from generation to generation.
